What are the most important rules

A historic day for Bulgaria! As of midnight today, our country is officially a member of the eurozone. From now on, Bulgaria's official currency is the single European currency.

A new year, a new currency, but also new rules. Let's take a look at some of them. The period during which Bulgaria will have two official currencies is one month - from January 1 to January 31, 2026. This means that citizens can make payments in both currencies and there should be no problems.

⇒ However, during this month, we should be aware that retailers may refuse to accept more than 50 leva coins.

⇒ In January retailers must give change in euros, regardless of whether we pay in euros or leva. An exception can only be made if there is insufficient cash in the till.

⇒ If we have to pay any tax or fee to the state or municipality during the dual circulation period, we should bear in mind that we can only pay in leva if the relevant service has cash registers for cash payments. If payment must be made by bank transfer, it can only be made in euros.
